Green Bay Packers gunned down by Dallas Cowboys in first half, 26-3

Green Bay Packers quarterback Matt Flynn might be the new sheriff in town, but he didn’t prove himself up to the task in the first half against the Dallas Cowboys.

Whatever playoff hopes the Green Bay Packers had coming into this week evaporated prior to kickoff, and the team played like it, sleepwalking through the first half to take a 3-26 deficit to the locker room.

Things got off on the wrong foot from the very first play, as the Green Bay defense gave up an 11-yard run to Dallas Cowboys running back Demarco Murray, and they didn’t get any better. Murray shredded the defense for 93 yards and a touchdown on 11 carries, including a long of 41 yards.

Quarterback Tony Romo was in fine form, completing 16 of 27 passes for 250 yards and a touchdown. His favorite target was wide receiver Dez Bryant, who nabbed six catches for 102 yards. Tight end Jason Witten, who was wide open for most of the half, chipped in a pair of catches for 38 yards, including a 25-yard touchdown reception.

Because the offense stalled several times in the red zone, the Cowboys leaned heavily on placekicker Dan Bailey, who was perfect on his four field-goal attempts, nailing a 50-yard attempt.

Meanwhile, the Packers offense wasn’t able to much of anything done.

Backup quarterback Matt Flynn, making his third start for Green Bay, looked timid and indecisive in the pocket, frequently throwing into traffic even when he had men wide open. He completed 10 of his 17 attempts for 117 yards and an interception.

Their only scoring came on a 57-yard field goal by placekicker Mason Crosby — his second of the season from that distance.

Standouts

Rookie running back Eddie Lacy more or less was the Green Bay offense. Behind an offensive line that was able neither to protect the quarterback or to open rushing lanes, he carried the ball eight times for 31 yards, averaging an unimpressive 3.9 yards per carry, although he did break off an 11-yard scamper. More importantly, he was Green Bay’s leading receiver with three catches for 33 yards.

Punter Tim Masthay bailed the offense out of trouble on multiple occasions, averaging 43 yards per punt. He has arguably been the Packers’ MVP since Aaron Rodgers (collarbone) was sidelined.

Slipups

The defense as a whole was so bad, it’s difficult to single anyone out. To name just one offender, cornerback Tramon Williams was caught flatfooted on a long pass, struggled to bring ball carriers down, and was flagged for illegal contact downfield.

The offensive line was dreadful yet again. Guard Josh Sitton was assessed for holding, while rookie left guard David Bahktiari was charged with a false start.

Green Bay Packers quarterback Matt Flynn was ineffective in the first half, as the Dallas Cowboys took a 26-3 halftime lead.

Injuries

Defensive end Johnny Jolly left the game with a shoulder injury and was listed as Questionable to return.

What’s next

The Green Bay Packers get the ball to start the second half and need to put some quick scores on the board, or this game will get out of hand quickly. It will be interesting to see if head coach Mike McCarthy puts third-string quarterback Scott Tolzien under center, or if he decides to stick with Matt Flynn.

Lacy went over 1000 yards tonight and still has the Steelers and Bears on the schedule.

He may have a 1300 yard rookie season while only playing 14 games.

Antonio Brown already went off.  Won this week with ease.

Remember when jwoude asked if it was too early to call the game over when GB was down 10? Yeah, that was dumb

Sorry Reesy I disagree, Flynn had a miraculous comeback but he definitely sucked balls at times. TD to Nelson was an awful throw. He is way to indecisive and has zero zip on anything longer than 10 yards.

Be grateful we were playing the Cowboys and thank fucking jesus Rodgers is probably coming back next week.

No, it was a safe bet. GB just decided to channel 2010 for the second half. Who could have predicted that?

Reesy is right.  He gets not much help, and generally just isn't the problem for the team.  Nether he nor Tolzien can be expected to carry this squad around.  Its no coincidence that Lacy and Flynn got effective at the same time.

But I was ready to try out Tolzien at half because I thought the game was over.  May as well play the young buck.  Turns out I was wrong.

 if I win this week, I go to a game with a $780 - $420 payout.  I am broke.  I need this.

Currently he is a better option. With more time on the actual squad I think Tolzien would blow Flynn out of the water.

Murray had 134 carries on 18 carries, a 7.44 yard average. It was egregious to stop giving him the ball.

It's true and you know it. Murray was gashing us and Dallas inexplicably stopped running the ball.

And how did that turn out in the end?

Packers made the proper game changes during half time and came back from a 23 point deficit.

Easier to just say fuck it and fold than it is to stick with your guy, call some plays that he and lacy can run and tired down the dallas horrible defense as they should have been doing from the start.

He also played so poorly in the first half that the Cowboys had a 99.7% probability of winning.

It is possible but Tolzein would have not been ready had he been put in tonight and the Packers season is over.

He has potential but it was not the right time to put him in.
