Black, Blue, and Ornery: Detroit Lions provide hope

As Andy Dufresne wrote in The Shawshank Redemption, “Remember, Red, hope is a good thing, maybe the best of things, and no good thing ever dies.”

Good morning, folks! Welcome to the Water Cooler Sports Black, Blue, and Ornery, your source for NFC North News on this Monday, December 9th, 2013.

Hope. The NFL giveth and the NFL certainly taketh away. This time of year can be a tough one for NFL fans, particularly those whose teams are hovering in contention.

You know who you are. The networks put up their fancy graphics of the playoff race and your team is over on the right side, in a column undoubtedly titled “in the hunt.” Winning the division may or may not be in play, and perhaps a Wild Card berth is the only chance at the playoffs. Or maybe both seem unlikely and it’s just a matter of time before elimination becomes official.

In any case, don’t give up. Don’t hope for losing because you think it’ll help your draft position or you’re looking for wholesale changes in the coaching staff and players. Strange things happen in sports, and it’s no secret the NFL has annually a high turnover rate in its playoff teams.

If or when your team finally gets eliminated, feel free to ponder and wonder about the future. But until then, enjoy the ride because you never know.

Just to clear it up, Cortland Finnegan does not make $15M a year.  His cap number this year was $15M (and that is what he made), but his cap number the next 3 years are no more than $10M a year ($9M in 2015).

I finally got to see the "pass interference" call on Leon McFadden in the Pats/Browns game. Ridiculous.

Very first thing I did in Madden yesterday after winning the SB was redid the roster a bit....

Traded Tramon Williams to STL for Laurenitis at MLB.

Traded Hawk/Starks to ARZ for DT Darnell Dockett

Drafted Dennard from MSU at CB.

Moved Hyde to SS.

Resigned Jolly.

Extended Cobb and Nelson

Let James Jones walk and drafted a WR in the 3rd.

Resigned Quarless and got Kellen Winslow as a back up.

A family my mom was friends with growing up, their oldest son murdered the Vet in my home town trying to steal drugs back in the 80's.  I was like 10 or so when it happened.  I remember having dinner with him.  Creepy!

Still haven't seen it.  I feel bad.  My neighbor is a Brown's fan, and when they went up by 12 with 2 minutes left, I text him "Go Browns".  I think I will avoid contact with him for a while...

Panthers need O-line, WR, and CB. All pretty equally, all three have been pretty obvious needs all year.

4 teams is not a playoff, imo it should be no less than 8, 16 would be perfect that way all the conference champs are in plus 3 WC teams

JVince 11
JVince 11

Yea and this year seems like the perfect year for it to have started.... FSU, Auburn, Bama, MSU, Baylor, and Stanford are worthy but only 4 are picked.

Ive worked on construction crews like that, I did not get that impression.  some were calm, some were calm like a bomb.

but I did work a warehouse job that had the production line consist of work release and convicted felon, second chance tax write off operation.  they were calm, but I did not work side by side with them

This is a draft where you can get a real good WR, in Rd 2, then you get a corner in FA,because rookie corners always have to go through a learning process, but they should go T, gross is getting old, and Bell sucks.

smtate91
smtate91

Yep. All 3 needs are pretty equal, so just take the BPA for any of those 3.

smtate91
smtate91

Our whole right side of the line is a joke. At least Chandler has an excuse though, he is a converted DT. Bell is just horrible.

JVince 11
JVince 11

they drafted a MLB at 8th overall i believe to replace Laurantius...

LSU4LIFE
LSU4LIFE

Then they would draft Dennard with one of their picks to replace him.

Finnegan's cap hits for next 3 years are $10M, $9M, $10M.  It is $15M this year only.

Tearloch
Tearloch

Was thinking his cap #, which is $9.5M next year.  Didn't know Finnie got that kind of deal.  OUCH

JVince 11
JVince 11

Tramon makes 7M... Finnegan makes 15M and is the highest paid defensive player in the nFL...

Tearloch
Tearloch

So they took Tramon's huge contract instead?

JVince 11
JVince 11

no I do not have it set to that.

JVince 11
JVince 11

they were all based on need.. ARZ has jokes at MLB and STL cut Finnegan's HUGE contract..

smtate91
smtate91

Do you have it set to where they will accept any trade? The ones in my franchise modes won't accept shit, have to overpay for anything.

BearsSaveLives
BearsSaveLives moderator

Isn't it supposed to be rooted in a little bit of realism though? Some of those trades seem far-fetched. I'll trade Rodgers to the Bears for Hester.
