Green Bay Packers thankful Detroit Lions keep game close, 17-10

A series of catastrophic mistakes by the Detroit Lions kept the Green Bay Packers in the game on Thanksgiving Day.Packe

The only chance the Green Bay Packers had to contend with the Detroit Lions on Thanksgiving Day was for the Lions to make mistakes. And make mistakes they did. In droves.

Instead of blowing out the Packers, the team that currently sits in first place atop the NFC North only managed to take a  17-10 lead to the locker room at half time.

On Detroit’s very first drive, Packers linebacker Clay Matthews III forced a fumble by running back Reggie Bush the Green Bay nine-yard line. Safety Morgan Burnett scooped up the ball.

Green Bay was unable to capitalize on the turnover, however, and was forced to punt it away.

The ensuing Detroit drive burned off the time remaining in the scoreless first quarter, ultimately ending in a 27-yard field goal by David Akers.

But the advantage was negated when rookie punter Sam Martin drove the kickoff out of bounds at the Green Bay two-yard line, triggering a penalty that gave the Packers the ball on the 40-yard line. Martin’s frustration was obvious as he left the field uttering a string of obscenities.

With Matt Flynn at the helm, the offense wasn’t able to accomplish much, so Green Bay settled for another field goal, this time from 54 yards.

Early in the following drive, Packers linebacker Nick Perry sacked Stafford, forcing a fumble that was recovered by Burnett for a touchdown.

Then, just as it seemed as though the Detroit offense was getting in rhythm, cornerback Tramon Williams intercepted a pass intended for wide receiver Kris Durham at the 34-yard line. Durham compounded the error by being flagged for grabbing Williams’ helmet.

Yet again Green Bay was forced to punt, and this time, Detroit would not be denied. They stormed down the field on a drive highlighted by a 32-yard pass to Bush, capped off by a five-yard scoring strike to Ross.

Detroit would go on to score yet again on a one-yard scamper by Bush. The half ended on a final laugher, as Packers head coach Mike McCarthy called a timeout to “ice” the kicker, and Akers subsequently missed wide right on a 31-yard attempt.

Standouts

Morgan Burnett recovered two fumbles in the first half, one of which he returned for a touchdown.

Slipups

The run defense was atrocious yet again, unable to tackle or maintain contain. They gave up 148 yards on 21 carries for a horrific 7.0 yards per carry.

Had it not been for the turnovers, this game would be a complete rout by now. The offense managed less than 50 yards of offense through two quarters, while the defense gave up an incredible 350 yards of total offense.

Injuries

Center Evan Dietrich-Smith left with a knee injury and is Questionable to return. His departure forced yet another reshuffling of the offensive line, and not surprisingly, Matt Flyyn was promptly sacked on the next play.

What’s next

The most remarkable thing about this game so far is that the Packers are only down by seven points. With the exception of the spectacular turnovers, they have largely looked listless and weak.

Green Bay gets the ball to start the second half. If they can’t find a way to get running back Eddie Lacy (seven carries, 13 yards) rolling in the third quarter, this game will probably get out of hand quickly.

Nobody is supporting their claims with proof and you all bear the burden. For shame.

In my experience, people who, rather than argue a point, argue the way you make a point, never have anything relevant to add to a discussion.

I don't necessarily care to add anything.  It just pisses me off to see such a lack of objectivity in a discussion.  I hate opinionated echo chambers.  It's an argument of principle.

They try to get by on loose analogies and technicalities to make themselves seem intellectual, when in reality they don't even want to state a claim, for fear of having to contribute actual substance.

In this instance, I'm really not trying to be a pedantic pseudo-intellectual.  I'm sorry if I come across as such.  You're right I don't want to make a claim.  Not for fear of provided substance, but because I don't want to appear a hypocrite.  Right now I am calling out unsupported claims so it'd be a self-defeating argument to make such an unsupported claim.

Just fucking tell me to drop the argument rather than trying to find ways to wittily insult me and get in the last word.

You're being a bit pedantic here.  You can probably catch the drift of what I'm trying to say even if it's not very eloquently put.

I agree. Our season fell apart when Rodgers went down. You should be concerned that your team sucks and you have no major injuries.

You might not be wrong. But you'll have to prove it if you want to be right.

Nope. I have a condition that makes me immediately stop caring about someone's post when they fail to punctuate it correctly.

What?  The very definition of pedantic is: "overly concerned with minute details or formalisms, especially in teaching."
