Good morning, ladies, gentlemen, and variations thereupon.  Welcome to WCS Black, Blue, and Ornery, your daily source for NFC North news on Wednesday, November 13, 2013.

Today in history has been a notable day for 20th century wars; major events in World War I, World War II, and the Vietnam War all occurred on November 13.

In 1947, the AK47 was first unveiled by the Soviet Union, paving the way for the weapon of choice by Goldeneye players worldwide fifty years later.

In somewhat happier news, the Vietnam Veteran’s Memorial in Washington DC opened on November 13, 1982.  This was part of a Veteran’s Day event in which thousands of Vietnam War veterans marched together to the site of the memorial.

I know it is no longer Veteran’s Day this year, but I would like to take this opportunity to officially thank all of the men and women who have served our country.   Your service is always appreciated, and your sacrifices are not forgotten.

Today is an auspicious day for birthdays, as NBA player Ron “Meta World Peace” Artest (34) and NFL players Samkon Gado (31) and Vinny Testaverde (50) all celebrate another year of living.  I’m sure Green Bay fans here at WCS all look forward to attending Gado’s eventual Hall of Fame induction (he did play for the Packers).

Chicago Bears

After placing cornerback Charles Tillman on injured reserve on Monday, the Chicago Bears find themselves with an open roster spot.  Consequently, they : defensive end Jermaine Cunningham, defensive end Sherrod Martin, and tight end Zach Miller (the ex-Buccaneer, not the one currently on Seattle’s roster).  The article notes the team could also activate cornerback CJ Wilson off the practice squad.

Wide receiver Sam Hurd spent part of the 2011 season with the Bears before being arrested for dealing drugs.  This in-depth article from details .  I highly recommend it as a fascinating read about how things can go so wrong when a young man with a lot of career promise makes poor decisions.

Detroit Lions

takes a second look at last week’s Bears-Lions game, detailing and .  It is not surprising that Detroit elected to blitz more with Chicago quarterback Jay Cutler hobbled.  The article notes blitzes did not seem to have much effect on quarterback production, but the extra hits they got on Cutler may have helped worsen his injury and contributed to his ineffectiveness in the second half.

For those who are interested in such things, gives you a list of against the Bears.

Green Bay Packers

Gil Brandt of cites the abysmal play from Green Bay’s backup quarterbacks the last two weeks as a textbook example of why it is in case your starting quarterback goes down.   I am sure Green Bay fans watching a promising season go down in flames due to Aaron Rodgers’ injury agree.

Meanwhile, Tyler Dunne of the says it is for a change.  With Aaron Rodgers, Randall Cobb, Seneca Wallace, and Bryan Bulaga on the sidelines, Green Bay’s offense can no longer carry the team, so the defense needs to do better than the 27 points they’ve given up each of the past two weeks.

Rookie punter Jeff Locke sold his #12 jersey to Josh Freeman and donated the proceeds.

Minnesota Vikings

Minnesota quarterback Christian Ponder had what was undoubtedly his best game of the season last week, and points out that .  This trend reveals itself throughout Ponder’s career, but unfortunately doesn’t mesh very well with the team’s preferred run-first offense built around star tailback Adrian Peterson.

Speaking of Ponder, after injuring his shoulder in the team’s week ten victory over Washington.  Meanwhile, ex-Viking Percy Harvin is , a matchup he should be very amped up for.

Finally, we end on some uplifting news.  In the midst of bullying scandals and players driving drunk, it is refreshing to hear about players like rookie punter Jeff Locke.  Locke sold his jersey number to Josh Freeman, and he is in Minneapolis.  Kudos to Mr. Locke.

Is Harvin back this week? Is that why Baldwin is sitting on the FA pile?
