Middle schoolers at Olivet

Middle schoolers in Olivet, Michigan prove that compassion still exists from the unlikeliest source.

Good morning, folks! Welcome to the Water Cooler Sports Black, Blue, and Ornery, your source for NFC North News on this Friday, November 8th, 2013.

Well, yours truly will be heading for the fun and sun of Phoenix, Arizona for 11 days of vacation with the family. (Then again, is it vacation if you don’t have a job?) In the meantime your trusty WCS staff will be covering the daily BBAO articles and hopefully providing their own style and flair so this train keeps moving along.

For my final installment for a while, I wanted to pass along a that should warm some hearts, particularly in the wake of the 24/7 coverage we’ve been getting concerning the hazing and/or bullying situation with the Miami Dolphins. For every negative story it would be nice if a positive story would get equal coverage, so I’m going to try and do my part here.

Also in some “feel-good” news, the Minnesota Vikings gave their fans something to cheer about by beating the Washington Redskins Thursday night 34-27.

Quote of the day:

Speak softly and carry a big stick; you will go far.

–Theodore Roosevelt

And on this day in history:

  • 1793 – The Louvre Museum, in Paris, opened to the public for the first time. I have actually been there and to be honest you would need an entire week to see the whole thing.
  • 1887 – Doc Holliday died at the age of 35. The gun fighting dentist died from tuberculosis in a sanitarium in Glenwood Springs, Colorado. Let’s just all agree that Tombstone is one of the most badass movies of all time.
  • 2000 – In Florida, a statewide recount began to decide the winner of the 2000 U.S. presidential election. And we thought Chad was just a country in Africa.

We also have some great birthdays to celebrate today!

  • Sam Bradford (26) - NFL quarterback who assumed the starting role for the St. Louis Rams in 2010.
  • Bobby Bowden (84) – Hall of Fame college football coach who turned a losing Florida State team into a powerhouse.
  • Parker Posey (45) - She made her independent film debut in Dazed and Confused (1993).
