Chicago Bears triumph 27-20 over Green Bay Packers in battle of backups

Quarterback Josh McCown and the Chicago Bears were handed a gift when Aaron Rodgers left the game with an injury, and they took full advantage to escape Green Bay with a win.

The game began as many expected. The Green Bay Packers (5-3) marched down the field on the first drive of the game, beating the Chicago Bears (5-3) defense easily through the air and on the ground.

Then Chicago defensive end Shea McClellin sacked quarterback Aaron Rodgers, who landed awkwardly on his shoulder and would not return.

It became a battle of the backups between Chicago’s Josh McCown and Green Bay’s Seneca Wallace, one from which Chicago emerged with the 27-20 victory.

Studs

Quarterback Josh McCown was magnificent in his first start since 2011, completing 22 of 41 passes for 272 yards and two touchdowns.

Wide receivers Brandon Marshall and Alshon Jeffery had big days, combining for 167 receiving yards and two touchdowns; the duo also provided excellent run blocking on the edges.

Running back Matt Forte had a great game, rushing 24 times for 125 yards and a touchdown and adding five receptions for 54 yards.

The offensive line gave up only one sack and did a good job in both pass protection and run blocking.

Defensive ends Julius Peppers and Shea McClellin combined for four sacks and an interception.

Duds

The special teams almost cost the Bears this game. A blown blocking assignment on an early Adam Podlesh punt cost them 65 yards of field position and gave Green Bay a short field that they converted into a touchdown. An onside kick by Green Bay in the second half gave the Packers an extra possession and a field goal.

The run defense was also awful on the night, leaving big running lanes exposed and missed too many tackles. Green Bay ran the ball 29 times for 199 yards — averaging 6.9 yards per carry — and two touchdowns.

Chicago allowed Green Bay to hang around by failing to make some big plays on defense; linebacker James Anderson and safety Major Wright both let interceptions bounce off of their hands.

Injuries

Wide receiver Brandon Marshall briefly left the game with a lower-body injury but was able to return.

What’s next

This was a huge win for the Chicago Bears, as they pulled into a three-way tie with Green Bay and the Detroit Lions (5-3) for first in the NFC North. Aaron Rodgers’ early departure was a game changer, and the Bears capitalized.

They now head home and prepare to host Detroit on Sunday. With Rodgers possibly out for quite some time, the winner of that game suddenly may be in the driver’s seat for the division title.

YOU KNOW WHAT THE FUNNY THING IS. PACKERS HAD OPTIMUM PERFORMANCE FROM OTHERES. GOOD RUNNING GAME, NO PENALTIES, SOME SPECIAL TEAM FLUKES IN THEIR FAVOR, SPOTTED 3 POINTS FROM RODGERS AND THEY STILL LOST AT HOME. LOL

Doesn't help Wallace that Jones appeared to be on a snap count, Newhouse was playing, Cobb and Finley were both out.

Rodgers could function without them. Wallace needs all the weapons.

I wish i could find a gif or the video of Lacy's run last night where he was heading towards the sidelines after a 10-15 yard gain and he straight arm chucked a bears player to the ground on the sideline and then stared him down.

Seneca had nearly 0 preparation for this game while the Bears had 2 weeks to prepare for the Packers. Still only lost by 7. Packers season isn't over. Giants and Eagles can be beat with Wallace. Packers beat the best Lions team of this century with a backup that couldn't make the Bills or Raiders.

So much overreaction.

Bear fans last week were ready to pack it in. 24 hours ago McCown was hot trash and they had no chance.

Packers fans are ready to give up the division because Rodgers Might miss 3 games. Today Seneca is a hot mess and they have no chance.

Detroit fans are buying champagne despite literally decades of failing with teams better than this one and counting on "easy wins" in the future despite their overwhelming history of losing to the dregs of the league.

I dislike the media. Not only do I think it's ridiculous how excited they get about injuries, they always drag Favre's old Wranglered-ass into it.

Well, the Eagles now have time to prepare for Wallace. The Bears didn't even know he existed.

I didn't think it was that bad considering the O gave the ball back to the Bears every 4 plays.

I do think he'll be much better with a week's practice.
