Quarterback Aaron Rodgers lead the Green Bay Packers to the NFC North’s lone Week 7 win on Sunday. The Packers defeated the Cleveland Browns 31-13 and moved into first place in the division.

Good morning, folks! Welcome to the Water Cooler Sports Black, Blue, and Ornery, your source for NFC North News on this Monday, October 21st, 2013.

Depending on which NFC North team you’re a fan of, it was either a good day, a bad day, or a really bad day. I don’t think I have to attach the team names to those descriptions.

The Green Bay Packers beat a shaky Cleveland Browns squad 31-13 to vault themselves a one-half game lead over the Detroit Lions and Chicago Bears. Unfortunately, the injury bug bit again, as tight end Jermichael Finley was carted off in the fourth quarter with an apparent neck injury.

The Detroit Lions played inconsistently in all phases and lost to the Cincinnati Bengals 27-24 on a last-second 54-yard field goal by kicker Mike Nugent.

The Chicago Bears lost to the Washington Redskins 45-41 on the heels of another horrid defensive performance. Starting quarterback Jay Cutler left the game in the second quarter with what’s been described as a groin injury. An MRI Monday will confirm the severity of the injury.

Back-up Josh McCown played admirably in relief of Cutler, but unfortunately the solid performance of the offense in addition to a special-teams touchdown by returner Devin Hester wasn’t enough to overcome the defense’s failures.

The Minnesota Vikings will begin the Josh Freeman era tonight as the newly acquired quarterback gets the start against the New York Giants.

Quote of the day:

A creative man is motivated by the desire to achieve, not by the desire to beat others.

And on this day in history:

  • 1959 – The Guggenheim Museum opened to the public in New York. The building was designed by Frank Lloyd Wright, not Art Vandelay.
  • 1980 – The Philadelphia Phillies won their first World Series. Wow, I had no idea.
  • 1994 – North Korea and the United States signed an agreement requiring North Korea to halt its nuclear program and agree to inspections.Well, that piece of paper was about as useful as a marriage certificate.

We also have some great birthdays to celebrate today!

  • Kim Kardashian (33) - Rose to fame on Keeping Up with the Kardashians alongside sisters Khloe, Kourtney, Kylie, and Kendall; brother Rob; and mother Kris.
  • Ricky Rubio (23) - NBA point guard who joined the Minnesota Timberwolves in 2011 and is considered one of the best Europeans to ever play the position.
  • Carrie Fisher (57) - She soared to fame while portraying Princess Leia Organa in Star Wars.

Steve Maneri (3rd string TE) and Lockett (don't know who that is) are being released by the Bears.

They will sign a QB (Jordan Palmer) and LB (don't know who yet).

Eli Manning wakes up in great mood realizing he didn’t do anything embarrassing Sunday, then remembers he plays tonight.

The phone was ringing at Matt Leinart's house, but he didn't answer when he saw a Chicago area code on the caller id.

I don't think you can really call yourself a Bears fan if you are really making this mistake...

I bet BWC wishes GB had tagged Flynn so they could trade him to Chicago.

I thought Maneri was released weeks ago...

Little Jordy P. I sure hope we don't have to see him start. McCown needs to be less of a risk taker against GB.

Jordan Palmer is in Chicago right now meeting with the team.  Leinart can remain on his couch for now...

  no, that was Kyle Adams.

But Maneri had his snaps taken by the guy they traded for from Dallas.

he knows the system from being here in preseason.  They can't re-sign Blanchard until after week 10, so Palmer was really the only option.

That tells us absolutely nothing. back ups against back ups is meaningless. Nothing I see in the 4th preseason game is ever anything to be hopeful for.

played well with backups against backups, had a passer rating above 100

Palmer started the game and played the whole first half.  They kept him until they needed the roster spot.

I'm not sure how much of the system he actually knows and I don't want to find out.

Trent Edwards got picked up by somebody?  I honestly thought he played better than Palmer in that preseason game...
