Samuel Colt became one of the richest men in America by selling guns.

Good morning, friends, and welcome to WCSN Grits, Gravy, and Gumbo, your daily serving of NFC South news for Monday, February 25, 2013.

On this day in 1836, Samuel Colt received a patent for his Colt revolver, a weapon that was used by both the Union and Confederacy in the Civil War and is still popular today. Colt was able to make high-quality weapons relatively cheaply by being one of the first to use an assembly line and interchangeable parts. I guess you could say he was the equivalent of a modern-day China.

On February 25, 1870, Hiram Rodes Revels became the first African-American to sit in the United States Congress. Everyone considers the South to be the most racist part of America, so I do think it is cool that the first black Senator came from Mississippi. Given their recent bad publicity for , perhaps Mississippi should be trumpeting Revels’ story far and wide today.

Tampa Bay Buccaneers

We have a pair of personnel updates for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. First, the team officially announced they , enabling him to become an unrestricted free agent. The team is prepared to move forward with Da’Quan Bowers, who was recently , as a starter in Bennett’s place.

Second, the Bucs are considering , who signed a large contract last offseason and underwhelmed in 2012. In addition to playing poorly, Wright was suspended four games for failing a drug test last season. I am sure Tampa Bay is shocked that a player they signed from the Detroit Lions could have drug problems; who could see that coming?

Finally, Tampa Bay is looking for answers after a promising 6-4 start faded into a 7-9 finish. Change this year will start at the top: head coach , hoping to avoid overworking his players in practice and tiring them out too much as the season progresses. Finding the right balance between being a taskmaster and player friendly is a difficult task, and Bucs fans can only hope Schiano learns how to do it sooner rather than later.

Tight end Tony Gonzalez has been a game-changer in his four years with the Atlanta Falcons.

Atlanta Falcons

Falcons blog continues their look at Atlanta free agents with and . They conclude that although Atlanta would certainly like to bring both players back, it is likely they will lose Moore in free agency. Anytime you have a secondary that gives up three touchdowns and over 600 yards in two playoff games while allowing both quarterbacks to have a passer rating over 105, you simply have to bring those guys back, right?

Tight end Tony Gonzalez, who is contemplating retirement on the heels of an outstanding season, has done more than just produce for Atlanta on the field in his four years as a Falcon. He has , helping them realize the position can be used as a dual-threat weapon to both block and catch the ball. Consequently, expect Atlanta to place a high priority on drafting a capable replacement for Gonzalez should he decide his career is over.

Carolina Panthers

The Carolina Panthers have been paying close attention to the and at the Combine. These are both obvious positions of need for Carolina, although you could also argue that the secondary deserves attention.

After last week and giving him more guaranteed money, there was rampant speculation that DeAngelo Williams, the other half of Carolina’s running back tandem, would be traded or released. Williams does, after all, have a massive contract, and the Panthers are extremely tight with the cap. Regardless, sources say that , as the team desperately wants to keep their backfield intact.

My two cents: although it is nice to have two talented running backs, paying both of them big money just doesn’t make sense in today’s pass-happy NFL, especially if you could trade one for a decent draft pick.

The Carolina Panthers are committed to keeping running back DeAngelo WIlliams.

New Orleans Saints

On the heels of being honored by the Touchdown Club of New Orleans for his work raising money and awareness for ALS, former New Orleans Saints safety  this weekend. Gleason, who is confined to a wheelchair due to the debilitating effects of ALS (Lou Gehrig’s disease), was pushed by brother-in-law Vinne Varisco. Even with the added difficulty of pushing a wheelchair the whole way, the duo still finished in one hour and 45 minutes. Way to go, Steve and Vinnie!

Can you ? Apparently he’s cooking up some Saints fandom, as he in a recent press conference. Apparently the Rock (otherwise known as Dwayne Johnson) is friends with Saints players (and fellow University of Miami alumni) Jonathan Vilma and Jimmy Graham.

Hmmn . . . what joke could I possibly make about a wrestling star being friends with the man at the center of the bounty investigations? Give me your best punchline in the comments below.

I think the fact that Santonio Holmes made 9.25 million last year is pretty funny.

It's hard to perform when your QB is buttfumbling all over.

don't know where you're getting these numbers, but Marshall is around $9M.  Regardless, it's about per season averages, and I'd say he should be somewhere around $8-9M per year if healthy.

I think the Vikings should find some yellow rocks, and pay their players with the "gold." Cap heaven.

I'm planning on stealing one while he is distracted, so having it signed is not an option.
