Good morning to all of you, and welcome to WCSN Grits, Gravy, and Gumbo, your daily helping of NFC South news for Wednesday, February 20th, 2013.

This has been a notable day in American history. In addition to the start of the United States Post Office (1792) and the first American to orbit the Earth (1962), which were both noted in the NFC North News earlier, there have been several other events of significance to American history on February 20. In 1809, the official decision that the federal government is more powerful than state governments was rendered by the Supreme Court, and the United States Merchant Marine Academy became a permanent service academy in 1956.

So thanks to February 20, you can get more junk mail than you’d ever want, and we all, regardless of our state of residence, can complain together about the terrible condition of our government. (If you live outside the friendly confines of the United States, I apologize for the inside joke, but I’m sure you can find something in your government to complain about as well.)

I’m not going to make any jokes about John Glenn orbiting the Earth, because that guy is awesome and flying in space is cool.

Tampa Bay Buccaneers

Tampa Bay Buccaneers guard Davin Joseph was honored for his work in the Tampa Bay community recently, at the Clearwater for Youth Celebrity Banquet. The Bucs as a team were also honored for their involvement in developing youth sports in Clearwater, including a $100,000 donation to help build a football field that can be used for youth leagues. Call me a sap, but I do love stories about teams and players giving back to the communities that support them.

Tampa Bay’s official team site has put together a video compilation of their top offensive plays from the 2012 season, which can be found in two parts and . The Bucs, who finished the season thirteenth in the NFL by scoring 24.3 points per game, definitely had their share of highlights on offense. You’ll notice, however, that there is no highlight video put together of their top defensive plays as of yet, probably because it will take a lot more work to find them.

Atlanta Falcons

Jay Adams of takes a look at various mock drafts around the internet to see Popular choices include tight ends Tyler Eifert and Zach Ertz, although defensive ends like Cornellius Carradine and Alex Okafor are also being thrown out there. None of this matters, however, as mock drafts are nothing more than a fun waste of time (especially this late in the first round). But if there’s one thing football junkies need this time of year, it’s time-wasters that are at least tangentially related to the game.

In other meaningless speculation, Falcons blog (they must have copied our name!) wonders about the . This move could make sense, as the Falcons are a Super Bowl contender looking to win now and in desperate need of pass rushers, while Freeney is a solid pass rusher who should have a few years left. Time will tell if anything comes of it, or if this idea vanishes into the ether of the internet as nothing more than wishful thinking.

Carolina Panthers

Stadium update! The Charlotte Chamber has announced its to help fund an upgrade to Bank of America Stadium. The city has pledged $144 million towards the projected $250 million upgrade, with an additional $62.5 million coming from the state of Carolina. If my math is correct, that means the Panthers are only responsible for $47.5 million, or a little less than 20 percent, of the costs to upgrade their stadium, for which they will be the primary beneficiaries. I wish I could get 80 percent of my housing upgrades subsidized by the government. As a graduate student making less than $30,000 per year, I need the money a lot more than owner Jerry Richardson, who is .

Worried about Carolina’s salary cap situation? You shouldn’t be, at least . He assures fans that the team has a plan already in action, and they are on track to be below the $121 million threshold by March 12. One rumored move that would help significantly would be to cut cornerback Chris Gamble, which would save the team $7.9 million.

New Orleans Saints

Another NFC South team with cap concerns are the New Orleans Saints, who continue to make moves in an effort to slash salary. After a couple restructures of starters, . This saves the team about $3 million against the cap in 2013, but leaves them lacking depth at cornerback and tight end.

The NFL combine starts later this week, and Nakia Hogan of the New Orleans Times-Picayune . All ten of them are defensive ends or linebackers, clear areas of need for the Saints defense, and all will be considered in the first round, or perhaps the second if they unexpectedly drop and/or the Saints trade up.

BYU defensive end Ezekiel Ansah could help improve the New Orleans Saints' pass rush.

City officials may not tout this top 10 listing

Mayor Chris Beutler also points to Lincoln's favorable rankings when he's bragging up the city.

But he’s probably not going to put one of the latest on his list:

Lincoln is among the top 10 adulterous cities, ninth to be exact, according to, which provides a site for users "seeking discreet extra-marital relationships."

The rankings are based on the number of people from communities signing up for the site.

I'm out for real this time. I have been walking between 8-9 miles a day lately and I have chosen a lounge a bit more than 4 miles away as my destination for today.

Just read where Keenan Allen wont participate in the combine on sunday. He is the guy many mock drafts have the Vikings taken. Was looking forward to seeing him.
