Quick Hits: Green Bay Packers down 21-24 as Colin Kaepernick runs over porous defense

By
Updated: January 12, 2013

San Francisco 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick tore through the Green Bay Packers defense in the first half, setting a new NFL postseason record for most rushing yardage by a quarterback.

Recap

If the Green Bay Packers were playing mistake-free football in the first half, they’d probably be running away with this thing. But they haven’t, so instead they’re looking up at the San Francisco 49ers, 21-24, at the half.

The story of this game has been 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick, who has efficiently exploited Dom Capers’ poorly schemed and executed defense to the tune of 107 rushing yards (an NFL postseason record) and a 20-yard touchdown on 11 carries — for an average of 9.7 yards per carry. He has also completed 11 of 23 passes for 148 yards and two touchdowns.

With the exception of an early interception returned by Packers cornerback Sam Shields for a touchdown, the defense has looked slow and out of step. Capers has kept the defense in man-to-man coverage that has left the entire middle of the field open, and he has shown no interest in making adjustments on the fly.

For their part, the Packers offense has been unable to establish a consistent rhythm, and it shows in the stat line. Quarterback Aaron Rodgers has gone five of 10 for 96 yards, one touchdown, and one interception on a senseless play that set the 49ers up with excellent field position.

In total, San Francisco has scored 14 points off turnovers.

Game Ball: Offense

Wide receiver James Jones has accounted for almost the entirety of the passing game, catching two passes for 64 yards and a beautiful 20-yard touchdown over the top of the safeties. He made one of the most impressive plays of the game, beating the coverage along the sideline for a 44-yard catch that set up an 18-yard touchdown run by running back DuJuan Harris.

Game Ball: Defense

The lone defensive highlight was Shields’ 52-yard interception return for a touchdown.

Goat

For a team that talked so much about peaking at the right time and playing their best football when it counts, this defense has looked terrible. They have been slow to react and incapable of either defending the perimeter or stopping the run. Linebacker A.J. Hawk has been lost most of the half, and cornerback Tramon Williams doesn’t look like he has what it takes anymore. His frequent inability to control his emotions is reminiscent of another defensive back who helped cost the Packers a playoff game. I speak, of course, of Al Harris.

Injuries

San Francisco 49ers right tackle Joe Staley was in noticeable pain in the first half.

Packers defensive end Ryan Pickett left on the Shields interception return with an undisclosed injury and did not return.

San Francisco right tackle Joe Staley battled an injured right arm for much of the first half but stayed on the field.

What’s next

The Packers have to score early in the second half or they are going to lose this game, plain and simple. If they are unable to find some way to contain Colin Kaepernick, the game will be over before the fourth quarter.

Who wants to hop onto the Ravens bandwagon with me? I'd just cant see myself rooting for any of the other NFC teams

Seeing Bradshaw reminded me: Some dude called in to a talk show today saying Bradshaw was as good or better than Brady and P. Manning! After this game I need something to laugh about!

Damn, I switched my official pick'em pick last night from SF to GB.  I bought all the talk that Rodgers was gonna light SF up in revenge.

I get so frustrated when I watch SF's offense.  They give you so many looks, you never know what they're gonna do.  Then I watch Chicago, and they're SO predictable.  I hope they get someone who knows how to mix things up.

Remember how butthurt the Packers fans got when I brought up the potential problem of GB's run D this week?  I get why now.  Easier not to think about it so you could convince yourselves you had a chance.

SF won this game the same way they beat Chicago--dominated the line of scrimmage on both sides of the ball.

Lots of hurt butts around the NFCN lately. Free Sitz baths for all.

Try not to swear in the write-up nonstop.  Gotta keep the site professional.

Predicable but nevertheless shitty ending to the season.  Off for the evening.

Childerz; Buhlitz: ice it for each other.  You can use each other's dicks somehow, I am sure.

I think we can wave goodbye to Jennings, Driver, and Woodson, among others. The list could be big!

That play looked EXACTLY like the one touchdown in the Super Bowl.

It could be worse, we could be stuck with the Bears or the Vikings, at least we're not that fucked!

Vince: only wanted to look at RB stats.  Said I was being a blind hater for looking at TOTAL run D vs. teams.  I guess Kaepernick's 180+ rushing yards don't count then, right?

I wouldn't have taken the point.  That wouldn't have been fair.

I am more optimistic as a Bears fan than I would have been had the bears made the playoffs and lost. that would have just been an illusion and one that could have kept the Bears from making necessary changes. I ain't even bummed or the slightest bit butthurt at this time.

sorry, not trying to call out all Pack fans here.  Vince has it coming though.  He was an ass that day when all I did was make a legit point with stats to back it up (oh yeah, it turned out to be prescient).

Vince will get shit from me when he shows up again, just because he spent a good 2 hours on Thursday calling me an asshole and hater for saying GB struggled stopping elite running teams this year.
