Donald Driver’s future grows uncertain
The Green Bay Packers have depth at wide receiver that is virtually unparalleled in the NFL. They have two of the best WRs in the game in Greg Jennings and Jordy Nelson, they have a young and upcoming player in Randall Cobb, who figures to play an increased role this season, and they have James Jones locked up for a couple more years. This means if the Packers go with five WRs like they did last season, that final spot is up to perennial fan favorite and the all time leading WR in Packers’ history–Donald Driver; and two players the team signed to their practice squad in 2011–Diondre Borel and Tori Gurley. Gurley last season recieved an offer from the Minnesota Vikings to play on their squad, and he turned them down.
The Packers could go with six WRs and take fewer tight ends or another position, but that still does not mean Driver makes the team. With his success on DWTS this season, it would be nice for the Packers to capitalize on that publicity bringing new Packer fans into the fold, and bringing new people to the game of football. The question is will they? If I were to bet my hard earned money, I would say that it will come down to how many WRs the Packers keep on their roster. If it is five, then I think Driver has played his last down as a Packer, but if it is six, then I think there is greater chance that we will have a farewell tour in 2012.
Watch probably the most memorable play of Donald Driver’s career!
